The Hunter Business Chamber 2008 Business Person of the Year, McCloy joined his father in the family construction business in 1976, taking over the McCloy Group in 1986. During the 1990s the company diversified into developing residential subdivisions, holding extensive Hunter-based commercial office space and becoming involved in tourism and hospitality venues.

In the residential area McCloy’s interests include Northlakes Estate at Cameron Park, Ironbark Ridge at Muswellbrook and Heritage Green at Maitland.

The company’s commercial property portfolio includes the Telstra Civic Building, more than 10 Hunter St office buildings plus buildings in Wickham and King St, making McCloy a big player in Newcastle’s renewal.

In tourism and hospitality McCloy has the $15 million luxury charter vessel MV Seafaris which operates out of Cairns for around $125,000 a week, and in the Hunter part owns Blue Water Pizza, Starfish Cafe, Harbour View Function Centre and the John Hunter Hospital food outlets. The company also operates a saltwater barramundi farm just north of Cairns.

Past projects of the group include John Hunter Hospital, Jewells Tavern and the Mattara Hotel, while buildings it has produced for charities at cost or below include the Hunter Life Education Centre, Ronald McDonald House and housing at the Spastic Centre of NSW at Wallsend. McCloy is also known to have made donations of $1 million to the Salvation Army and Newcastle University among other charitable donations.
